Research: Codes and Conventions of a Thriller/Horror

Horror and thriller films are designed to frighten and panic the audience often invoking our own worst fears.

Usual convention of a thriller/horror film:

- quick cuts and camera angle changes
- music that gives tension
-low shadowy lighting
- often a prominent use of mirrors and staircases
- often shown from 2 points of view
- often isolated urban settings
- threatening weapons for props
- camera shots are usually from a point of view
- use of certain colours to portray certain emotions e.g. red for blood and danger, blue for mystery and death
- credits often over a black screen with non- diagetic music
- panning and tracking shots are often used
- most commonly used shot is close-ups
- non-diagetic music is most commonly used
- killer or monster often pictured in the background of shots
- lead character is often the sole survivor
- often concludes in a terrifying shocking finale
- killer often has a trademark way in which he/she kills

Research: 'The Blair Witch Project' - Shots of the opening sequence that we could use for our own task

Looking at certain shots of the opening sequence that i could use for my own idea

I like this image of the person crying as it is up close up to there face but not showing all of there face. I also like it because you can see how distraught and terrified the character is which would be a good type of shot to use for Karly.

I also like this image as it's showing peoples hand print's in blood which we could attempt to do but instead of using a wall we could use a tree or post.

This is an image of the person filming the floor whilst running. This would be good to use to show pace of the piece. I also like how this part is in black and white which we are aiming to do. Now i can see it is a good effect to use as it creates shadows.

"The Blair Witch Project "- 1999

Three students travel to Maryland to make a student film about a local urban legend known as the Blair witch. the basic storyline is the three students went into the woods for a 2 day hike but never returned. A year later there footage was found and they decided to make the footage into a film to show people the possible truth behind the tale of the Blair witch.

I think this has been one of the best film’s to look at as it’s going for the type of action we are looking at. I want to use the idea’s of running through the woods with the characters holding the camera themselves as it will give a jerky effect and create more panic and tension. I also like how it is in black and white as it creates more shadows and makes it look scarier.
The only problem was the opening wasn't very helpful as you don't see the actions in the woods till quite later on in the film and this is the part that we are mainly looking at as this is where we want to focus are piece on. Filming are own horror scene in the woods.

Research: 'Shrooms' - Shots of the opening sequence that I could use for my own Idea

Looking at certain shots of the opening sequence that i could use for my own idea

I like this shot as it's very misty and you can just see the shadow of the person running through the woods. Also the light is very gray scaled and blue which is what we are thinking of doing with our wooded scenes.

I also like this shot because you can just see the edge of the hand in a dark liquid which the audience can only assume is blood. This would be a great type of shot to use in our own piece as it creates a high sense of fear.

This is another great example of this technique as the audience can only see the hand and blood which would help add a sense of mystery to the piece as you can't tell who the person is.

I like this shot as it is filmed through the foliage and as we are planning to film in a wooded area this would be a great effect we could use.

Research: 'Shrooms' 2007

'Shrooms' - 2007

'Shrooms' is about 3 American couples that travel to Ireland in such of the infamous trip you receive from magic mushrooms in that area. They camp out in the woods and whilst sitting round the campfire a terrifying tale is told that might have more truth to it than they realize. As the trip they are on gets more powerful people start to disappear and see horrifying images and people stalking them through the woods. It all starts to go wrong when the main character Tara eats a deaths head mushroom which are forbidden to eat. She instantly goes into convulsions and the campfire story becomes her reality. All characters are killed of one by one until Tara is rescued. The audience are then given the idea that all the killings could of possibly been due to Tara and her psychotic 'trip'.

When looking at the opening of 'Shrooms' i found this to be the perfect opening like 'The Hole' as the end of the film is shown at the beginning, This is the story line we are going for. I liked this opening because it had a girl running through a dark misty wooded area whilst disturbing images flashed up. This would be interesting to use as we could tie in images of the extent of the stalkers obsession. I looked further on through the film to see if there was any ideas that I could use for my opening sequence. I liked how they used shots through the trees of people running with the camera far away from the actor’s panning round them. I also liked how they used low shots of people crawling along the floor. Another part that I liked was the make-up and gore they created as we are looking to make our piece gory as we can to create more fear and tension.

Research: 'The Hole' - Shots of the opening sequence that I could use for my wn Idea

Looking at certain shots of the opening seq
uence that i could use for my own idea

I particularly like the opening credits of this film as it is not done in the conventional way. The names are randomly dotted over the screen and appear when it seems a flashlight is shone over them. this could be an interesting effect to use on our thriller film.

I also like this screen shot as this would be a good effect to use when Karly first enters the woods as it is blurry and it would show that she has been drugged.

This shot is good as you can see the wooded lane littered with sheets of paper. You then later see what is on this paper and it ties in really well of giving the audience an idea of what is happening. Using props like these would help the audience to understand the plot of our piece.

This is a good shot I think as we want to do a lot of waste down shots for each character so the audience can view the action from all angles.

I also like this close up shot of just her feet as we are also aiming to do shot's similar to this.

With these three shots in succession of each other the audience begin to get the idea of the plot as you can clearly tell that the girl walking is the girl in the poster. Somehow doing something like this for our piece could make it very interesting for instance we could have photos of the main character that the stalker has taken somewhere.

I think with all the shots we want of characters screaming it would be a good idea to a close up shot sideways such as this as it would help to show the fear the character is feeling and help build tension.

Research: 'The Hole' 2001

"The Hole" - 2001

What is 'The Hole' about?
The Hole is about a character called Liz who is first seen stumbling down the road to her school bloody and barely walking. After the police find her you follow the twisted tale of how her apparent best friend and school nerd has sadistically locked her and 3 other members of her school (Frankie, the person Lix idolizes, Mike who she is secretly in love with and wants and Mike's best friend Geoffrey) in an old war bunker in the middle of a woods. He has lured them down there by promising them an escape from a dreaded school trip promising to let them out 3 days later. But Martin never returns.
Liz is the only one who manages to clamber out alive after weeks of sleep deprivation, hunger and dehydration resulting in the 4 teenagers turning to madness. It is the job of Philippa Horwood the psychologist to help Liz re-tell the details of her traumatic experience so they can send Martin to jail. the further she takes Liz through her journey though the more the audience realize Liz's sadistic nature. How she herself locked her and her 3 friends down in the hole to have wild drug fueled parties and sexual intimacies all to try and win the love of Mike. after she realizes her plan is not working and begins to fall through she locks them all in and allows them to die one by one till she releases herself back to reality. the audience follow her twisted mind to see how obsessive love can be for a teenage girl.

"As he begins his version of events, a terrible truth begins to emerge, a truth that will expose the full horror of an obsessive love, a love that will stop at nothing to be fulfilled..."
this is an important quote from the synopsis of the film because this is the exact idea we are looking at.

I chose to look at ‘The Hole’ as it was a film also set in the woods like our idea, and it had very good twists. From watching the opening sequence and then the rest of the film i found some ideas that i would like to use in my own project. For instance i like how in the opening titles you see one character walking along a road, very dirty and asif she is drugged. There is also lot’s of fliers of missing people and as she look’s at them she gets flash backs from what has happened to her. The camera angles and shot’s are mainly close ups of her face as well. Another thing i liked was that every time a character or production team’s name came up it was in the font of the title on the case of the film and also it appeared with an effect that looked like someone shining a flashlight upon it. I would like to try and use some of these ideas for my own piece.

I particularly liked this idea as it is showing the end of the film at the beginning. However with are piece we want to achieve this more at a faster pace like in 'Shrooms'.

Planning: Story board for the main task

These are the first few scenes that i have story boarded for our main task called "OBSESSION"

Planning: Shots for possible location for the main task

These are the locations and angles of shot’s in these locations that we are aiming to use in the main task.

Brickmakers

Brickmakers - Table

This is where we would like to film the two friends waiting for the boyfriend. I like this location as it is also close to where we plan to film the shots for the chase in the woods. We also like this location as you have good background noise and you could just spot the stalker in the background without it looking suspicious.

Brickmakers - Going Into The Pub

This location is good as we can use this to show that the characters were near the general public so wouldn’t generally be at harm. We can also use it to show that the main girl goes away from her drink giving the stalker access to spiking her.

Brickmakers - The Stalker Walks Off

This is where we are thinking of having the stalker walk off from after he is spiked the characters drink to show that when Karly cmes back to her drink she is totally alone.

Brickmakers - High Angled Shot

We would preferably use this shot when Karly comes back and goes to down her drink so you can see the contents of the drink before she drinks it and also her swallowing the pills.

Woods

The Woods - Running Down

We thought this would be a good place for all the characters to run down from as it would theoretically show everyone entering the woods. Ideally we would use this bit at the start of when they first go into the woods.

The woods - Climbing through

We could get some interesting shot's here of Karly crawling away from the stalker through here.

As the woods is a public area when we come to film it we will have to film where ever is clear from the general public.

Planning: Idea for Music to use in our main task

Music is highly important in a film to create the right atmosphere especially for a thriller/horror genre and also for fast chase scenes.

These are some of the tracks we have been looking at using for our main task:

Hadouken! - Turn The Lights Out
I particularly like this song as its got a fast pace and very in with today's music but its also quite angry and has a raw sound to it. I think it would be a good one to use for the chase scene in the woods as the speed of the song would help quicken the pace for the action. The lyrics to the song also fits in really well with the stalkers anger and determination.

Hadouken! - Rebirth
I also like this track as it has creepy whispering voices in the background before the main beat of the track kicks in. It also has quite heavy guitar and bass parts whilst still a lot of electronic music. This would be good for the running scene as the song would pick up pace with the action which i think would really help build it and create the right amount of tension and atmosphere.

The Prodigy - Spitfire
I really like this track. Its got minimal lyrics so the audience will stay focused on the action in the film and it goes really well with our idea. Also the sound of the song also helps with Karly being drugged as the distorted off tune sounds help to give of the effect that she is. I think i like this track the best though as its also quite angry with the heavy drumming and the tone of the voice that's singing. i also like the girls voice in it as this also adds effect to the drugged scenario.

Planning: Shots needed to be used due to health and safety

As we are filming a lot of scenes to do with knifes and also fight scenes I've had to look at alternative ways for filming these scenes.

For instance:
- we are going to have Karly hitting the stalker with some sort of weapon, preferably a tree branch. For this scene we are going to have to make sure that the area the stalker lands in is clear and that he falls down in a comfortable way so as not to hurt himself. We are planning to film this scene straight on so it looks like I am hitting the stalker with the branch when actually I plan to stop just before I get to him about 10 cm away.

- The stalker is then going to pull Karly over so we also have to make sure that area is clear. I am going to fall on my side and put my hands out so i can lower myself down to the landing. We are going to do this as quite a low shot so it is not so evident that I am lowering myself into the position on the floor.
- Karly (myself) then kicks the stalker in the face. With this part we've decided to have me kicking the camera instead. With doing this I will not harm Kevin then. We plan to have Kevin holding the camera from the point of view of where he would be lying and when my foot gets close to the camera he is going to pull it back so we don't damage the camera either.
-Another scene is the stalker pulling the scarf off of Karly's neck. i am going to wear the scarf very loosely at this point so as no risk of strangulation.
- When Kevin has the knife in his hand we had originally planned for him to run down with it but we thought this would be a danger hazard as if he trips he could possibly harm himself.
- When the knife is at my throat we are going to film it from behind so the knife doesn't actually have to be very close to my neck.
- When Nik is running in to push Kevin away from me we planned to have kevin throw the knife out of his hand in a direction that no actors or crew are standing in.
- With the fight scene we have already thought this part through and have rehearsed it multiple times so as no one gets hurt.
- When Kevin slits my throat we are going to film it as a long shot so the audince can't see that it is not near me.
- In the last part where Kevin goes to stab Kirby we're going to film it over Kevin's shoulder and angled downwards so you can't tell the exact distance between them.

Evaluation of the preliminary task

Considering we had only a few hours to film our preliminary task and the decisions to change the charachters and costumes, i think the end result was as good as we could make it. Are original idea for this task was to have myself playing a clumsy investigator who takes his job seriously interrogating an old woman, played by Jenni Dack. We encountered many problems in finding the costumes and getting into character to play these roles. To sort this out we changed our idea to a serious investigator, now played by Jenni Dack, interrogating a french exchange student played by myself. We decided to keep the genre as a comedy/thriller spoof as it still fitted in with the dialogue we had written and rehearsed.
The story line for this task is that the investigator is looking into a murder and trying to solve it. This leads to her interrogating a french exchange student who is believed to be a suspect. The french exchange student doesn’t entirely understand the english language, resulting in the investigator becoming angrier and angrier and storming out, leaving the suspect alone in the investigation room. We wrote this story line as it then created some short comical lines for the characters and fitted in with our spoof genre.
We used the shots that were needed for this task such as the shot reverse shot during the investigation, match on action when the investigator is coming down the corridor and then enters the investigation room and we used the 180 degree shot whilst both characters were sat at the table. We came across problems whilst filming these shots as we had to do it all by hand as we couldn’t find a tripod that worked so many of the shots came out shaky. When it came to editting the footage we noticed that we hadn’t succeeded in getting the full 180 degree shot due to not using a tripod.
We had to change our location as well because when we went to film the room we were going to use was not available so we had to use the board room at Sewell Park. This created many problems because the room was too big to make Jenni’s character seem menacing and give it the claustrophobic effect that you usually get from interrogation scenes. We also noticed that many things in the background made it seem like it wasn’t a real investigation room and ruined the effect and feeling we were trying to create such as students art work. Another problem we encountered with the location was that it was in the center of the school during lesson time so in the background you can often here young children in the corridors.
We used minimal props because it made it easier to keep the continuity. all that was used was a folder for the investigator and a cup of drink and a bag for the suspect. During each shot we had to make sure we kept everything in the same place which was difficult when we had to move stuff around for the next shot. We experienced a lot of difficulties when it came to editing it all together as many of the shots were cut off to soon and did not match the next shot. We could of improved this by watching the footage back whilst filming and making sure they matched up.
Overall after all the difficulties we encountered i think we tryed our best and i am reasonably pleased with the end result.
